14:1-4
We now get an event set in a clear historical context. There were various small kingdoms, rather than great nations. Some kingdoms were ruling over others. Kedorlaomer had been ruling other kingdoms, something they had put up with for twelve years, but then they got fed up with this and rebelled. Four kings went to war with five other kings. This pattern has been repeated many times in history. Sodom and Gomorrah are among the rebellious kings.
14:5-7
We then get more information on the exploits of Kedorlaomer. These details indicate that this may come from the victory records of the victorious king. At one time many considered this chapter to be a much later addition to Genesis. However, increasing archaeological evidence has led most to abandon this theory, supporting the Biblical narrative. We are reading of genuine historical events.
