Isaiah 6:9,10 -Be ever hearing, but never understanding

6:9,10
This seems strange to us as it appear that God is deliberately wanting the people to not understand. However, it is perhaps better to see it as judgement upon their sin, and the consequences of their sin. Sin blinds us, it distorts our thinking. I am sure we can all think of examples in our own life, consider what happens to your thinking when you have sinned. We start making excuses in our mind, start justifying ourselves, trying to convince ourselves that it wasn’t so bad after all, and many do lots worse. Sin blinds. The people had heard the word of God again and again. It was in the Law, it came through the prophets, but they never understood. The effect when they heard the word of God was that their hearts were hardened against it. We see the same today. It is clear and obvious that God’s plans for sexuality and family life are the best, yet society is utterly blind to this. From a human perspective the situation is hopeless. We cannot save ourselves, but God can save us. The Holy Spirit can take away the veil that is over our minds and enable us to see the truth.
