5:27
God now “bigs up” the quality of the enemy forces. They an elite fighting force, well organised, they know what they are doing. Imagine how Isaiah would sound to the people. One can imagine that they wonder “whose side is he on?”. However, Isaiah did not seem to encounter much opposition, at least he was not thrown into prison, unlike Jeremiah who was considered to be an enemy of the state. At the time of the Assyrian invasion Isaiah had the king’s ear.
5:28-30
The description of the fighting force that Judah would face continues. “There is only darkness and distress”. Things are not looking good for Judah nor Israel.
So we have come to the end of the introduction, in the next chapter Isaiah will be commissioned by the Lord. So what we have had is a setting of the scene. The key elements are:
- Sin in the nation is the root problem.
- God’s judgement will come upon the land because of this sin.
- Salvation will come, and a salvation that will have global impact.
