Zechariah 9:9,10 - Rejoice greatly, O' daughter of Zion

9:9
This verse is well known for the connection made with it in Matt 21:5. The key aspect of His coming on a donkey is His humility. This is in stark contrast to how the kings of the world came. They would come in pomp and boastfulness. Jesus would come in righteousness and humility. Tragically, the Jews of Jesus day also expected the Messiah to come in military power. The verse opens with the words of Rejoice for their king is coming with salvation, yet when their king did come they failed to recognise Him! Though on a much lesser scale, we can all make the same mistake. God promises salvation for us, yet it does not come in the way we expect, so we miss it.

9:10

When kings conquered a region they would often execute vengeance. Yet when Cyrus captured Babylon he proclaimed peace, and this from “sea to sea”. Cyrus quite clearly was not the Messiah, nor was he ever intended to be, but God raised him up as a type of Messiah, ie demonstrating some of the characteristics of the true Messiah. So we can see the significance of “sea to sea” and the type of Messiah that Jesus would be. He would speak peace to nations. It is not Jesus’ task to exert military power over the world, rather He calls all men everywhere to peace with God. Yet His reign will be global.
