Zechariah 4:11-14 - Two olive trees

4:11-14
Zechariah then inquires further about the vision. It seems that the angel did not answer him at first, and only did so when Zechariah expanded on the question. Even then the answer is not overly helpful to us! “These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.” The question is who are the two anointed ones? The most likely answer, at least in the immediate context, is that they are Joshua and Zerubbabel. Accepting this, what does it mean? It means that the role that Joshua and Zerubbabel have is essential in the outworking of God’s plan. Not essential in the sense that God is dependent upon the two of them and everything falls apart if they do not do their job. Rather, essential in the sense that God has given them a key role in His plan. This is how the sovereignty of God works out. The success of His plan is never in doubt, but at the same time the role that we have is vitally important. Joshua and Zerubbabel may have thought of themselves as small and insignificant, overwhelmed by the difficulties and opposition that they faced, but they should not have been so. Likewise, we should faithfully serve the Lord in what He gives us to do, knowing that it matters, and that His plans will succeed.
