Acts 27:33-44 - Shipwrecked

27:33-38
Paul knew that though the people would be spared, the ship would be lost, so he implores them to take action in accord with that. So they had to ensure they had eaten as much food as possible before jettisoning the cargo. Note that Paul is calm in the midst of the danger and taking command of the situation. Paul also gave thanks, openly acknowledging the Lord. This also encouraged all of them to eat. They then threw the wheat overboard in order to lighten the ship, this would reduce the chances of it going on the rocks.

27:39-44

We continue to get an amazing amount of detail about the events on the ship. This is consistent with Luke having been on board (notice the “we” in 27:1). The bay referred to in v39 is taken as what is now called St Paul’s Bay. The ship was run aground here, it was in pretty bad shape, but they were safe. The soldiers were going to kill the prisoners, presumably not wanting criminals on the loose in Malta, nor to be held responsible for losing the prisoners. The centurion stopped them because he could not let Paul, a Roman citizen, be killed. So all the people on board the ship escaped safely to the land.
