Zechariah 3:9,10 - I will remove the sin of the land in a single day

3:9
We then get a messianic prophecy. Jesus is the stone, elsewhere Jesus speaks of Himself as the stone that the builders rejected. The seven eyes represent perfection and signify the gospel going throughout the world. The Lord is the Lord of all the earth, and He sees everything that goes on in the world. Then we get the focus on sin. The Jewish leaders failed to recognise their own need of forgiveness, and so rejected Jesus. Recognising our own sin is absolutely crucial to appreciating the gospel and appreciating Jesus. The Messiah would take away the sin of the land in a single day, a clear reference to the cross.

3:10

What have vines and fig trees got to do with it? Everyone having their own vine and fig tree was a seen as a symbol of general peace and prosperity, and is used elsewhere in the Old Testament. True prosperity for Israel would come only through Christ. The same is true today. Israel will never find peace by acquiring land. This does not mean that the land is not important, but it needs to be given its proper place. More importantly, the top priority for Israel, and for our prayers for Israel, should be that they find Christ.
