9:1
The first and second covenants are compared with each other. The first covenant had all sorts of regulations, as outlined in Exodus to Deuteronomy. Along with this there was an earthly sanctuary, originally this was a tent or tabernacle, later there was a temple, and then a second temple. The important word here is “earthly”.
9:2-5
We then get a quick summary of some of the details regarding the tabernacle (or tent). There were two main areas, the first room containing a lampstand and consecrated bread. Behind a curtain was the Most Holy Place, in contrast to the Holy Place. This contained the ark of the covenant, which contained Aaron’s staff and the stone tablets of the covenant. There were cherubim above the ark. However, the writer does not want to dwell on the details, especially as this was all superseded!
