Deuteronomy 21:1-7 - If someone is found slain

21:1

We have had rules regarding accidental killings, now we get them regarding unsolved murders. Bloodshed has always been regarded as a most serious offence in the eyes of the Lord, and one of the consequences of a people abandoning God is that there is an increase in violence. This is still true today. If you listen to the news in Britain we hear the evidence of this. There is also the sin of abortion.

21:2-7

We now get instructions on how the situation was to be handled. The first thing was to decide which town would take responsibility, and this was simply done on the basis of which town was nearest. After this there was a ritual of killing a heifer. Its neck was to be broken. This was probably to distinguish it from animals offered for sacrifice. The priests and elders were also involved in the ritual. The key thing was there declaring that they did not shed the blood, nor did they know who was responsible for the killing.
