Titus - Introduction

Introduction

Titus is the third of the pastoral epistles, addressed to Titus, a Gentile believer and co-worker with Paul, who was on the island of Crete.

The letter was probably written from Rome towards the end of Paul’s life. Gal 2:3 mentions Titus as being Greek and uncircumcised. Earlier Paul had sent him to Corinth to deal with the difficult situation there. Titus was not as close to Paul as Timothy was, but was probably more competent. Paul does not seem to have a very high opinion of the Cretans! So he gives Titus clear instructions on how to establish the church and deal with troublemakers. Good works and sound doctrine are the two major themes of the letter, showing that the two go together, and are not in anyway opposed to each other, or separate entities.
