Philemon 1:19-25 - Confident of your obedience

1:19

Paul reiterates his promise, emphasising that he is writing this bit in his own hand, so Philemon knows that it is a genuine offer from Paul. Paul then applies a bit more pressure! He reminds Philemon that he owes his very life to Paul, for Paul brought the gospel to him. We do well to remind ourselves frequently that we have been saved by grace. We deserved nothing, but God has given us everything in Christ. This truth should profoundly affect how we treat others.

1:20,21

Paul does want some benefit from Philemon, it is the benefit of seeing Philemon respond to the current situation out of a purely gospel motivated way. If he does so then Paul’s heart would be refreshed, for he would see the fruit of the gospel continuing to grow. Paul then expresses his confidence that Philemon will do what is right.

1:22-25

The letter finishes with a few closing remarks. He asks Philemon to prepare a guest room for him, for he hopes to visit him soon. Various other of Paul’s co-workers are mentioned as sending their greetings. Finally he closes with a blessing that the Lord Jesus Christ would be with Philemon in his spirit. Philemon would then certainly respond in the way that Paul hopes.
