Ephesians 4:20,21 - In accordance with the truth

4:20
“That is not the way of life you learned”. It is clear that when people came to faith they were then taught how to live. We could say how to live the Christian life, but really it is just life, for the way of the world is the way of death. Becoming a Christian is not just a matter of assenting to some credal statements, and is definitely not just an emotional response. We are born again of the Spirit, we become a new creation, and we are involved in that ongoing transformation. And that involves us learning how to live, and that will be living in a way that is very different to the way that the world lives, the way that we have been brought up.

4:21

They heard about Christ, and they were taught “in Him” in accordance with the truth that is “in Christ”. So again we see the absolute Christ centeredness of it all. The teaching was more than just conveying of information, they were taught “in Christ”. Christ is present with us when we are faithfully following His instruction to make disciples of all peoples. We can be pretty sure that He is not with if we are merely affirming people in their godless ways. Jesus said “I am the truth”. The truth is more that propositional statements (though it most definitely includes that!), it is about the person of Jesus Christ.
