35:5
The coming of the Lord is associated with many things. One is vengeance and judgement, another is rescue and healing. The eyes of the blind will be opened, and the deaf will hear. Given the words we have encountered in Isaiah (eg Is 6:9) there is a spiritual dimension to this. People’s spiritual eyes will be opened. But there is also a direct physical application as well. When Jesus came He did open the eyes of the blind, and in Matt 10:4-6 this is used as part of the “proof” to John’s disciples that Jesus really was the Messiah.
35:6
Joy and salvation come when a people’s eyes are opened to see the glory of God, their ears opened to hear the message of salvation. People spend so much of their time trying to avoid hearing the word of God, closing their minds to it. This is done in rebellion, but when God opens a peoples’ hearts freedom comes. Their tongues instead of moaning all the time shout for joy, and streams flow in the desert. Turning to the Lord is the most effective and important thing a person or a peoples can do in order to transform themselves and situations.
