Isaiah 34:8-11 - The Lord has a day of vengeance

34:8-10
Any nation which acts against Israel is courting great danger, putting itself at severe risk of judgement from the Lord. Edom is an example of this. When she taunted Israel or took advantage of her, she thought she was acting with impunity, but God “has a day of vengeance”. There is a twofold purpose to this. One is judgement on the guilty nation, the other is to “uphold Zion’s cause”. The destruction of Edom is extremely severe. This section is one which Jesus’s hell descriptions allude to.

34:11

The precise translation of the birds given as “desert owl” etc is uncertain, but the latter part of v11 makes the meaning clear. The place will become desolate. Chaos and desolation will reign in Moab. When we see dictatorial regimes collapse, desolation and chaos go along with the collapse. But we also see the same phenomenon in countries in the West, where there currently seems to be increasing chaos and dysfunctionality.
