1:18
May the eyes of our hearts be enlightened. Within each of us there is a belief of what the world is like and how we fit in.This is usually a bad belief, one dominated by fear and insecurity, or one dominated by pride and self-centredness., or some mixture of these things and other sins. We need to know within ourselves who God is and who we are in relationship to Him. Only when this happens do we have true peace, does a true stillness come into our lives. We are to know the hope to which He has called us. Without Christ we may look ahead and see only things to fear. In one sense this perfectly reasonable (without Christ) as death awaits us all. But in Christ we have a glorious hope, and Paul wants us to know that hope. And the “glorious inheritance of God in His people”. This could be either the inheritance we will receive, or the inheritance God receives. In fact, they are one and the same. God is creating a people for Himself, a people who will fully love and trust Him, and we are part of that people. So it is both God’s inheritance, and our inheritance. People so often think that submitting to God means we lose. Now there may well be temporal suffering, but when we are under God’s authority we always ultimately gain. Look at Genesis 1, what did God say to man, but to have authority over the earth. In Christ we have a glorious future.
