Deuteronomy 31:6-8 - Be strong and courageous

31:6

“Be strong and courageous.” This is a command to God’s people. Paul tells us to be “strong in the Lord”. They would face enemies, but were not to be afraid of them. How could this be? It was because the Lord was with them, and His promise to “never leave nor forsake” them. That promise applies to us as well (Heb 13:5).

31:7

In the earlier part Moses seemed rather resentful of the fact that he was not allowed to go into the Promised Land, now he is focused on preparing the people for doing so, even though he himself will not be going in with them. Here he appoints Joshua in the present of all Israel, so that they all know that Joshua is the new man. He tells Joshua to be “strong and courageous”. He was to go into the land, and then divide it among the tribes.

31:8

Moses assures Joshua that the Lord goes before him, and would be with him. The Lord does not just go with us, but He goes before us as well. “He will never leave you nor forsake you”.At the end of Matthew Jesus tells us that He will be with us until the end of the age (Matt 28:20). The Lord’s commitment to us is everlasting. So we should not be afraid nor discouraged.
