31:17,18
In response to their apostasy God would hide His face from them, He would forsake them. Now note that in 3:8 Joshua has been told that the Lord would never forsake him. So how does this work? Even if all around us are abandoning the Lord, we must stick with Him, and we can be confident that He will stick with us. Many disasters would come upon the people, and eventually they would realise that the reason for the disasters is because God was not with them. And this happened because they turned away from God and turned to other gods.
31:19,20
In the next chapter we will read the song that Moses was to record and teach the people. The song would be a witness against them. Our nation, and the West as a whole, has turned away from the Lord. We are in a state where nothing is working. We need to realise that the only solution is to turn to the Lord. God would take them into a land flowing with milk and honey, but when things were going well they would turn away from God and turn to worshipping idols. They would reject God. Why does this happen? It is the fruit of the depths of rebellion within our hearts.
