1:2
The gospel is universal, but is firmly rooted in God’s workings with Israel. The gospel that Paul was preaching was not some form of recent innovation, but had been “promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures”. Any attempt to divorce the gospel from Israel is unfounded. There are those who seem to think that Israel no longer has any special place in God’s plans, but to believe this is to deny so much of Scripture. The general way I look at things is that Israel is a sort of microcosm of the whole of humanity. So in Israel we see the depths and extent of human sinfulness. She should have been a blessing to all those around her, through her living according to God’s ways. Instead she was a disaster, suffered many disasters, and brought disgrace to God’s name. However, she will still be saved and transformed, and this through the grace of God.
