If the people disobeyed God’s messenger then they would find that God was opposing them. However, if they did obey God’s messenger then they would find that God was an enemy to their enemies, and an adversary to their adversaries. It is far better to walk in step with the Holy Spirit than to be battling against Him.
23:23,24
The angel/messenger going before them would tend to favour the “angel” interpretation, but I suppose it could mean the human messenger leading them. Whatever the case, 23:23 takes the victory as a given. God would blot out their enemies. The key point here is that they must on no account adopt the ways of their enemies. They were not to bow down to their enemies gods, not adopt any of their ways. Instead they were to completely overthrow them. It is sad when the church seems so keen to adopt the ways of the world and bow down to its gods.
