Luke 7:36-38 - A sinful woman

7:36
In this chapter we have seen various people show faith in Christ and receive from Him: the Centurion, the widow and now a “sinful woman”. We have seen John the Baptist have doubts, and we have seen the Pharisees being utterly blind. Indeed a Pharisee is involved in the incident we are about to look at. Jesus reached the people who humbled themselves and believed. There was nothing in their life or behaviour to commend them to God at all, but they simply put their trust on Christ, and so received from Him. we can apply this to ourselves first, if we go to God in faith we will receive. We can then apply it to mission, we take Christ to the people. Some will accept, some will reject, but it is likely to be predominantly those considered of little value by society who will be most likely to accept the gospel.

7:37
Jesus was at the house of a Pharisee for dinner. Although Jesus had many harsh things to say about the Pharisees He did not disassociate from them. He was happy to meet with them, giving them the chance to hear the gospel and respond to it. A sinful woman came along. She had heard about Jesus and believed there was hope for her in Christ. The woman was in all likelihood a prostitute. The dinner such as Jesus was at was not a private affair, but even so the Pharisee would not welcome a prostitute.

7:38
The woman was in tears and wet Jesus feet with them. Then she wiped His feet with her hair and poured the perfume on His feet. The perfume would be a perfumed oil, ointment (ESV and KJV) is probably not a good translation. The woman was overcome with emotion.
