7:31,32
Jesus now gives commentary on the reaction of the people. This seems a little strange as the previous two verses have implied that the people believed but the religious types rejected, yet this section seems to imply that it is addressed to all the people, and that most of them rejected Jesus. Jesus alludes to what was apparently a common little ditty quoted by children.
7:33-35
John the Baptist was a very austere man with a lifestyle to match, so some complained that he was too severe and accused him of having a demon. Jesus, the Son of Man, came “eating and drinking”, ie lived a normal life, so they accused Him of being a drunkard. People can, and will, always find something to complain about, some reason to criticise. “Wisdom is proved right by her children”, Jesus is saying that the fruit of the ministry is the test for authenticity. Both John and Jesus produced good fruit. We should make sure that we judge aright.
