10:1-19
Rehobom had succeeded Solomon. However, things were not straightforward. Jeroboam had fled from Solomon, but now saw a chance, so he returned from Egypt. Jeroboam urged Rehoboam to lighten the load on the people. Rehoboam wanted some time to consider the matter. He consulted the elders who advised him to be kind to the people. However, REhoboam was an idiot and rejected the advice. Instead he consulted the young men who were beholden to him, and they urged him to do the opposite and make the burden even harsher. The idiot took this advice. All this was actually part of God’s judgement on the nation. Unsurprisingly the people reacted against Rehoboam. So Israel rejected the house of David.
