19:1-19
David acted graciously towards the Ammonites, but his kindness was rebuffed. Nahash, their king, died and David sent messages of sympathy, Nahash having shown kindness to David in the past. However, the Ammonites reacted with suspicion and humiliated the envoys that David sent. The Ammonites realised that their actions would cause trouble, so set out to attack David, David sent Joab with the army to meet them, and they defeated the Ammonites. The Arameans sought to help the Ammonites, but it did not go well for them, so they were no longer willing to help the Ammonites. David was establishing the kingdom.
