David made Solomon his successor. Deuteronomy paid great attention to the Levites, and David now does the same. He knew that they were the ones to be in charge of the work of the temple, and organised them for this work. He counted them. Now in view of what happened with the census of the fighting men, one might wonder if this was wise, or in view of the fact that it does not seem to be a problem here, what the difference? Maybe it was that in counting the fighting men David was demonstrating doubt in God, here he is doing it for organisational purposes. Aaron had a special place among the Levites (4:13).
