Numbers 16:29-35 - If the Lord creates something new

16:29,30

Moses then sets a test. If the rebels die by natural means, then Moses was not a man chosen by God. Conversely, if the Lord does something new and the ground opens up and swallows the rebels, and everything along with them, then that will show that they were indeed rebelling against the Lord. Moses is putting his trust in the Lord. He is also depending upon the Lord doing something new. This is interesting in view of the fact that later Moses will fail because he did not really trust in the Lord and did not let the Lord do something new.

16:31-35

As soon as Moses had finished speaking the ground did open up and swallow up the rebels, their families and their possessions. We have a saying that “I wish the ground would open up”, I guess that few people know where it originates from, and we definitely do not want the ground to open up! The two hundred and fifty men who held censers were consumed by fire. If we rebel it will also affect our families. Rebellion is a very serious sin with deadly consequences.
