3:10-12
The astrologers reminded the king that he had said that anyone who failed to worship the image of gold was to be thrown into the blazing furnace. They then took great delight in pointing out that there were “some Jews” “who pay no attention to” the edict. It is perhaps significant that they went for Daniel’s friends rather than Daniel himself. Perhaps they thought that because the king had such respect for Daniel it was better to go for the friends. In the gospels there were one or two occasions when the religious types went for the disciples rather than Jesus Himself.
3:13-15
The king flew into a rage and summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and they were brought before the king. He asked them if it was true that they did not serve his gods or worship the image he had set up. It is interesting that it is not the worship of God that is the problem as far as the king is concerned, but failure to worship his gods. In the early church it was refusal to pay homage to Caesar that was the crux issue, not that they worshipped Jesus. Today society does not mind churches meeting, as long as we bow down to their gods of sexual immorality. But if we truly worship Christ we cannot worship any other god, and we cannot bow down to their gods of sexual immorality.
The king gives the three a chance, if when they hear the sound of the horn etc and bow down all will be fine, otherwise they will be thrown into the blazing furnace. “What god will be able to rescue you from my hand?” This was a fundamental flaw in his thinking, and in all godless people there is a fundamental flaw in their thinking.
