Jeremiah 52:1-9 - The city was kept under siege

52:1-3

We now come to the final chapter which is more a summing up of historical events than prophecy, Jeremiah’s words having ended with the previous chapter. The words sum up the spiritual situation. The king (along with the people) did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his predecessors had done. The Babylonian defeat of Judah was a result of God thrusting the people from His presence. Zedekiah had rebelled against the Lord, now he rebelled against Babylon. Rebellion is part of human nature.

52:4-9

Babylon marched against Jerusalem and besieged the city for about eighteen months. During that time conditions within the city would become increasingly desperate. Eventually there was no food left. Then the city walls were broken and the army fled. Babylon pursued Zedekiah and captured him and he was taken to Babylon.
