Jeremiah 51:1-8 - Flee from Babylon!

51:1-5

The description of the destruction of Babylon continues, and in a graphic sense. Then verse 5 brings in Israel and Judah again. Babylon may have thought that God had abandoned Israel and Judah, but this was not the case. This should also serve as a warning to those today who think Israel no longer has a special place in God’s plans.

51:6-8

While the previous few verses have consequences for those who oppose Israel, this section has implications for Israel (and by continuation for those of us who follow Christ). They must flee Babylon, otherwise they would be destroyed because of the sins of Babylon. There is a time to flee the world. Babylon that once seemed so powerful would come to nothing. The language of nations becoming drunk on her wine is also used in Revelation. Emphasising once again that if we want to understand Revelation we need to understand the Old Testament, in particular the books like Jeremiah, Daniel and Zechariah.
