Jeremiah 1:3,4 - The word of the Lord came to me

1:3
We get a list of the various kings that Jeremiah’s ministry encompassed. So he served from the reign of the good king Josiah through several bad kings, and right up to the exile in Babylon. The kings were the ones who nominally had power, but it is the word of God through Josiah that prevailed, and that had long lasting effect. We need to remember that when we encounter opposition from the world. Men vanish like the grass, but the word of God last’s forever.

1:4

Jeremiah is writing this in the first person, the word of the Lord came to me. We are not told how it came, and that does not really matter. God may use dreams, vision, impressions on our mind, enlightening us as we study Scripture, angelic visitations. The means does not matter, what does matter is that it is the word of the Lord. And how do we know if it is indeed the word of the Lord? The most important test is that we measure it against the written word, the Bible. There will be no “new revelation” in the sense of anything that contradicts or supercedes Scripture, but there are those who say prophecy no longer exists. This is a very silly notion and an unbiblical one. God may choose to tell someone to go to Manchester (or any other place) and may choose to do so audibly, in a dream or vision, via an angel, or any other method He chooses. Who are we to tell God He cannot do this anymore! And if He does send such a word it is not Scripture and has no bearing on the authority of Scripture! Get a grip for goodness sake.
