Exodus 32:21-24 - They are set on evil

32:21,22

Moses had left Aaron in charge, so he questions him as to how and why he let this happen. He also makes clear that Aaron bore responsibility for this fiasco. Aaron does not answer well. First of all he puts the blame on the people. Now the people were responsible, and their hearts were set on evil, but Aaron had made no attempt at all to change the disastrous course they had set themselves on.

32:23,24

Aaron’s answers then get even worse. The words in 32:23 were true, it was what the people had said. He even admits to telling the people to hand over their gold. The last phrase in 32:24 is utter nonsense. Aaron is trying to make out that the golden calf magically appeared out of the fire once the gold was thrown in. Ex 32:4 makes it clear that Aaron purposefully fashioned the idol. He deliberately made it. We need to take responsibility for our sin. So often we effectively say “it just happened” as though we played no part in it.
