We think that we earn what we achieve, but the truth is that it is given to us by God, it comes from heaven. There is a fundamental difference between the Godly and worldly view. One is God centred, the other man centred. Sadly this occurs in churches as well. A church or a person can only achieve what God wants it to achieve. Sometimes God may give us what seems like great success, but then it comes to an end. This is what was happening to John. He had been “the man”, the one everyone came to see, the happening thing in religious circles. Now this was coming to an end. His disciples were worried about this, but John wasn’t, for he had true understanding. He knew where his “success” came from, and, as we shall see in later verses, what the true purpose of his mission was.
We need to get a hold of this receiving from heaven concept. On the one hand, in worldly terms we may seem insignificant or to be doing something insignificant. But if it is from God then it is the most important thing in the world for us to be doing, and in God’s eyes may be far more important than we ever imagine. Or God may just set us aside for a time. Conversely, God may give us something that seems far too big for us, but if God wants us to do it then that is what we must do. Remember that Moses thought he was totally unsuited to rescue Israel from Egypt, but he wasn’t because the mission came from heaven.
