Hosea 6:5-7 - I desire steadfast love

6:5
So judgement is all they will receive, and this judgement is serious, Notice the importance given to the words of the prophets, God created the world by His word. When God speaks it is the same as actions, and God spoke through the prophets. These judgements, God’s words, spelt death for the people. This is not some arbitrary killing of people, but God’s judgement on mans’ sinfulness.

6:6
The sacrifices were part of the Law and they were an important part of the Law, but the Jews thought they were important in their own right, when their true importance lay in what they were pointing forward to: the sacrifice of Jesus. God wanted their hearts, so they would show mercy, and that they would know Him.

6:7

It says here “like Adam”. Now Adam can refer to Adam as in the first man, or to mankind in general. ESV seems to prefer the former, and NKJV the latter. Indeed, the note in my “Cultural Backgrounds” study Bible suggests that it refers to a place. I must admit I am not convinced by this. If we take the ESV line then the way to look at this verse is that Adam had everything he could want or need, even a good wife! Yet he sinned, he broke the covenant. Israel had everything from God, yet they sinned, they acted treacherously against God, or faithlessly as ESV has it.
