5:8,9
Gibeah, Ramah and Beth Aven lie on a line leading north from Jerusalem. “Lead on Benjamin” would seem to imply that Judah is attacking Israel, but that seems rather odd. The trumpet is a call to the war. Ephraim, or Israel as a whole, will be laid waste. And there is not doubt about this. It is not a prediction of what might happen, but of what will happen.
5:10-12
Judah is also subject to judgement. Her leaders are criticised as being “like those who move boundary stones”. Boundaries were considered to be very important, they were boundaries established by the Lord and were not to be violated. So Judah would also experience God’s wrath. Ephraim will be oppressed, but will still be intent on following her idols. Verse 12 could mean that God will send decay into Israel and Judah, or it could mean that as far as they are concerned God is like a decay. In the West today God and His teaching is, for the most part, considered to be something detestable.
