5:13-16
These verse may strike us as being rather unfair to women, and no very spiritual! The things is we can sometimes be super-spiritual. The practicalities of life matter, and by being sensible and realistic we can reduce the risk of sinning. Conversely, by being super-spiritual we can actually increase the risk of sinning. See how home life is seen as being an important part of a walk with God.
“If any woman ...” could be “If any man or woman ...”. However, the former is the best attested, and would seem to make more sense, as it could be a little dodgy for a man to be looking after a bunch of widows! Whatever the case, the principle is that individuals in society who are taking care for people should continue to do so. Then the church would focus on caring for those who were genuinely in need. In political terms we should be wary of the state taking responsibility for all things, this will only lead to trouble in the long term, however good the motives might be.
