1 Timothy 4:6,7 - Nourished on the truths

4:6
When one is a leader most of us feel vulnerable. Indeed, one might say that if anyone who does not feel vulnerable in themselves is unfit to be a leader! Timothy was facing false teachings, and behind these teachings would be strong figures. Paul reminds him that his role is to be a “good minister of Christ Jesus”. We could take this as being approved by Christ, or as faithfully presenting Christ to the church. We should, of course, do both of these. So we are faithful ministers if we faithfully present the truth of God’s word to the church. There are many ministers today who would do well to take these instructions on board. We are to be feed off the truth, not man’s own ideas.

4:7

“Have nothing to do with godless myths and old-wives tales”. They had godless myths in those days, and we have them today, and all branches of the church are susceptible to them. There is a tremendous temptation to add things to the gospel. The catholic church adds myths with its undue veneration of Mary and saints. Charismatic preachers are forever adding extras to the gospel. The gospel is the gospel, and is all that we need, and it is powerful. So instead of getting involved in irrelevancies which should “train ourselves to be godly”, feeding off the word of God
