9:35,36
Jesus had left the man even before He had healed him. He had done this knowing what would happen and allowing the man to be thrown out of the synagogue. Why did He do this? The man had just received his sight, but there was something far more important. The greatest danger was that he would just adapt his old life when he needed to live a new life.
Now, having been rejected, Jesus meets with him again. “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”. The man’s answer indicates that he had some conception of who the Son of Man was, which is the figure revealed in Daniel. If he knew who he was, then he would believe in him. The man was ready to believe.
9:37,38
Jesus declares that He is the Son of Man. So again we see that Jesus knew exactly who He was, and that He is not shy about claiming divinity. The man immediately declares that he believes and also that he worshipped Jesus. This last bit is very significant. If Jesus was just a man He would not have accepted worship, but He does accept it because He is the Son of God. John probably related this incident because it mirrored the experience of many of the early Christians. They were rejected by the Jews, but they had found new life and freedom in Christ, and had committed their life to Him.
