John 9:25-29 - What did he do to you?

9:25-27
The man is getting increasingly emboldened by now, Maybe he is sensing the unease and uncertainty of the Pharisees. So he starts by stating that he has no idea whether or not Jesus is a sinner (and based on his limited encounter with Jesus this was a fair response), but he did know that once he was blind and now he could see.
The Pharisees then probed deeper. They were looking for evidence that Jesus had “worked” on the Sabbath.
The man now gives a rather cheeky reply, asking them if they want to become disciples of Jesus. He could see that they were struggling, for he had already told them everything he could.

9:28
This did not go down well. So they insulted the man back, claiming to be disciples of Moses, and telling the man he was a disciple of Jesus. At this point, at least, he was not a disciple of Jesus, but the Pharisees were desperate. We live in a time when the world is getting increasingly hostile to Christianity. We need to recognise two things. First the opposition can be very serious and have very serious consequences, including for us personally. Remember Jesus went to the cross! But we also need to recognise the fundamental weakness of those who oppose Christ. Inside there is deep insecurity.

9:29

They then compared Jesus with Moses. They knew that Moses had met with God and that God had spoken to Moses. Remember that Jesus has been saying that He says only what He hears the Father says, so they are directly questioning what Jesus has been saying. “We don’t even know where He comes from”. Remember too that Jesus has been saying that He comes from the Father. However, it was also true that they did not know where He came from, for they did not know heaven, nor the Father.  Just because you tell people the truth does not mean that they will hear the truth.
