This vision signifies wickedness being removed from the land
and taken to Babylon. So what are we to learn from this?
First, why is woman used as a symbol of the wickedness
in the land? This is not an example of sexism! The Hebrew word for wickedness
is feminine in gender, so that might be the reason. It could be associated with
sexual sin, but that is not mentioned specifically here. The two who carry it to
Babylon are women, so women are given a positive role in the vision as well as
the negative one.
Wickedness belongs in the kingdom of the world, not the
kingdom of God. We should also remember that Revelation refers to the whore of
Babylon (Rev 17), to which there is an obvious link here. When it comes to
reading Revelation it is important to be aware of the great extent to which it
draws upon the Old Testament prophets.
