John 8:9-11 Go and sin no more

8:9

People may put on a brave face, but deep down all of us know that we are sinners. It is very difficult to persuade someone to confront this issue, indeed only the Holy Spirit can do that. The crowd gradually slunk away, beginning with the older ones. Maybe their experience made them more aware of the truth. When we try to shame others it can make us feel self-righteous. We should be very wary of focusing on what others do wrong. Eventually Jesus was left standing alone with the woman.

8:10,11

Jesus now turns His attention to the woman. In the eyes of the religious leaders the woman was a mere pawn in their power game, they had no concern for the woman herself. Jesus did care for the woman, and now addresses her. The crowd had no right to condemn the woman, but she had still sinned and she needed to address the issue of her own sin. So Jesus commands her to sin no more. It is vital that we take on board the whole story, not just part of it.
