Revelation 14:6,7 - Fear God and give Him glory

14:6

Next John sees “another angel”. This is actually the first angel we have seen in this chapter, but there have been many who have already appeared in Revelation. Angels play an important part in God’s economy. “He had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth, to every nation, tribe, language and people.” This echoes the Great Commission of Matt 28:19,20. We do well to remember that salvation and proclaiming the gospel are God’s primary concerns, even in the midst of all the turmoil that we find in Revelation. There is to be no hiding from the realities of life, the realities of the world’s rebellion against God, and its consequences for the church, but in the midst of all this we also need to remember that proclaiming the gospel is what we are here for.

14:7

The words that the angel says in a loud voice could be taken as summing up part of the gospel. We are to fear God, not man, and are to give God the glory. Sinful man does not fear God, and gives glory to himself or to other men. Glory has the meaning of “weight” or “significance”. Sinful man does not credit God with significance. Why should man do this? Because the hour of judgement has come. We should worship the one who created all things, rather than worship created beings or created entities.
