6:1,2
We have the picture of a courtroom used to describe the dispute between God and Israel. There was a fundamental disagreement them. The mountains are presented as hearing the case from the two parties, though we will actually just get God’s side. Why does Micah use mountains and “strong foundations” as hearing the case? Probably because of the certainty of these aspects of geography. The mountains do not move, they are steady. So the “case” will be decided against eternal standards. The Lord has a complaint against His people. In religious debates it is usually presented as atheists or other sceptics have a case against God. Even believers sometimes think they have a case against God. Who of us has never thought that God has treated us unfairly? The reality is that God has a case against us!
6:3,4
God invites Israel to say what He has done wrong. How had He “wearied” them? God had brought them up out of Egypt, He had rescued them from slavery. God had sent Moses, Aaron and Miriam to lead them. It is rare for Aaron and Miriam to be mentioned outside of the first five books. Notice also that Miriam is mentioned along with Moses and Aaron. She is seen as being in important part of the leadership.
