Luke 14:15-25 - The Great Banquet

14:15-24

One of the guests made what he probably thought was a clever statement, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God”. This was a big mistake! We should never think we can appear “clever” with Jesus.  Jesus then proceeds to tell a parable of the great banquet. A great banquet was being held and many were invited. Jesus is telling this parable to show what the feast in the kingdom of God is really like, in particular the reaction of people, ie you and me. Many were invited, but most made excuses. The master was angry, so he sent the servant to get the poor, blind crippled and lame. Remember that these are the people Jesus had said the host should have invited to their dinner party. Many of these did come, but there was still room. So the servant was set out all over the place to compel people to come. the banquet would be fully attended, but those who thought they should have been there, and indeed should have been, would not get in. Jesus is addressing the attitude of the Jewish leaders. They did not realise how precarious their position was, and how serious the consequences of their rejection of Jesus would be. We too should ensure that we are heeding Jesus’ words.
