Isaiah 6:4,5 - Woe to me, I am ruined!

6:4
The doorposts shook and the temple was filled with smoke. This is a sign of the presence of God, of His awesomeness. Men get big ideas, we think we are in charge, that we can manage anything. The tower of Babel is the archetypal example of this, but the pattern is repeated again and again. We find dictators thinking they can dominate the world. So far, everyone with such ambitions has failed! But this is not limited to individual madmen, societies as a whole imagine they can manage without God, our own society is a prime example of this. Suffice it to say that the Lord is not impressed.

6:5

Isaiah has seen the glory of the Lord and is trembling with fear. “I am ruined”. After the miraculous catch of fish Peter implored Jesus to go away for “I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). The glory and holiness of God exposes just who we are. All our pretensions are swept away in an instant. Isaiah knew that he was “a man of unclean lips” and “lived among a people of unclean lips”. He was a sinner from a sinful people. And so are you and I. The glory of the Lord puts everything in perspective, and exposes the truth of a matter.
